3 September 2017: Slunj, Croatia to Maribor, Slovenia
Mileage: Today-5; Total-304
To explain the low mileage, we took a bus from Slunj to Zagreb, Croatia, and then a train from Zagreb to Maribor, Slovenia. While in Zagreb, I cycled about Zagreb and perhaps a mile of riding in Maribor. Thus, a cycling map was not included.
As the cycling was minimal, I'll relate most of the day in photos.

Bus to Zagreb. Our concern was whether bikes would be allowed on the bus and running into a surly driver. A light rain fell as we waited in the chilly bus shelter at 7 am. Fortunately, the early Sunday load was light and the luggage compartment was nearly empty. The driver was friendly, adding only 7 kuna for my bike trailer case. The fare was posted at essentially 10 euros or about 73 kuna. Stuart handed the driver a 200 kuna bill, and he asked for more. Puzzled, we complied. Based on the receipts, he must have mistaken the 200 bill for a 100, as we were overcharged exactly 100 kuna with no way to prove what happened. However, it was still a minimal cost.
Zagreb. Soviet-style apartment construction, much like East Berlin. Units were poured individually, lifted into place, and then utilities installed. The primary fallout were the utilities, very uneven distribution of central heating.

Helpful Station Master. Numerous train personnel and passengers went out of their way to assist. Listening to the station announcements sounded like the names in an olympics gymnastics competition.

Dora. Dora was preparing to audition for an opera the next day. She sounded great in this stone-walled chamber, the place where our hotel asked guests to store bikes. Our central Maribor hotel has several names: Uni Hostel, and Hotel Orel. It's quite large, clean, everything works, and has the fastest web access we have experienced. I found it on-line, programmed the address in my Garmin, and it actually directed us to the hotel from the train station.
Tomorrow we ride north towards Vienna. The weather looks good for 2 or 3 days. Mornings will be chilly, about 50F and the high of 70F should be ideal. We're back to euros until Hungary.
