11 September 2017: Budapest, Hungary

Mileage: Today-22; Total-612

Today was a personal sightseeing day, as Stuart has visited Budapest numerous times. Much as last year in Madrid, I used the Hop-on; Hop-off Bus map to cycle to the various sights, along with Stuart's recommendations. I first cycled across the bridge to the older Buda side and went upriver nearly 5 miles. I was told that there was a Roman encampment, but the excellent riverside trail (the EV6 Route) transitioned to city streets, and I lost interest in navigating Monday morning traffic. I returned and followed cycle paths to Castle Hill, then back to the Pest side, multiple sights, lunch, packed the bike, and then found the major tourist market. I'll venture out for an early light dinner and then early to bed, given my 4 am car pickup to the airport.

What follows are some sights of Budapest that caught my eye.

Buda side.

I particularly like the colored shingle/tile roof.

Pest from Castle Hill on the Buda side.

Given the guards and guard shelters, must be the royal residence.

Heavy construction/reconstruction.

The Hungarians-Austrian-Germans fought the Soviet Army from Castle Hill, holding out for about 6 weeks. Soviet shelling pretty much demolished most of the original buildings.

Wall panel.

Cathedral on Castle Hill, Buda.

Castle Hill Statue

Lots of these Guy on a Horse statues.

Castle

Those Magyar leaders were a serious bunch. Apparently, no one knows much about the actual appearance of these early Magyar leaders, Anonymous wrote the history, and his identity remains . . . anonymous.

Hordes of tourists. Bus loads, group leaders branching pendants or umbrellas, posing with selfie sticks, and general lack of awareness that anyone else is about. Lots of parked giant busses, the occasionally jitney, and more adventurous groups on bicycles following their tour leader like ducklings.

Note the cycle path on the bridge. I was glad I brought by bike bell.

Parliament

Sculpture made from crushed aluminum cans.

The following photos are of Heroes Square, mostly honoring the 7 Magyars who are credited with founding Hungary, per Anonymous, the historian who recorded the history of the Magyars and founding of Hungary.

Gate to the Magyar History Museum, near Heroes Square and the Baths.

Touching his pens is rumored to improve a person's writing. We can only hope it works. Hopefully, my typing and spelling will also improve.

Baths. Closed with lots of construction. Adjacent to Heroes Square and the large baths complex was a little-used city park.

Dog of the Day

Church in a Cave. Pest side.

This saint looks lost or confused. Perhaps his pilgrimage resembled our bike tour.

Packed, two-story public market. You can get anything you want at . . . the Budapest public market.

OK, Fraser, here are some food photos from this market, just for you.
