25 August 2017: Hereg-Novi, Montenegro to Dubrovnik, Croatia
Mileage: Today-30 Total:-48
25 August was fairly short, hot, hilly, included a border crossing, and a stair-infested route to our lodging inside the Old Town Dubrovnik walls. Today's blog will be limited to many photos with captions.
Hereg-Novi fortification near our apartment.
Breakfast. My croissant, Stuart's Coke.
Tourist Baking beds are ready.
Hereg-Novi harbor, beach, and swim area.
Reentering Croatia
Banned photo of the Montenegro-Croatia Border Crossing Queue. Bikes get to ride to the front after an 8% assent. Queues were shorter today, but still very long. Either the border agents have the slowest web connection or simply link to too many web sources.
Lodging is advertised everywhere.
Facing northwest, Route 8 runs left of this coastal valley and river. A small, undulating road appears to connect small villages on the right of the river at the base of the coastal range.
South of Dubrovnik. Traffic was heavy, especially between the airport and Dubrovnik. We hope it abates northwest as we must ride the same highway, Rte 8.
Maya, our host, who met us outside her apartment with two, cold, Heineken tall-boys.
Stuart and Maya. Maya and her husband live below and own Storia, and Italian restaurant.
Our Dubrovnik Apartment. Excellent except for the steps.
Stuart Descends. The lower half of Dubrovnik is reasonably flat consisting mostly of the commercial and government establishments and offices. The upper portion slopes steeply—as you ascend, the relatively smaller bars, boutiques, and galleries are replaced by housing, perhaps the most expensive lodging in Croatia.
Typical upper street. We had no idea that Dubrovnik was this bike challenged.
Dog of the Day #1
What's On in Dubrovnik.
Preparing for an evening concert.
Dubrovnik Cathedral
Las Vegas is NOT the only city with a pirate ship. In fact, they have two. This one is sailing backwards as they depart on a sunset cruise.
Dog of the Day #2. Growled at his portrait.
Entrance Mantel
Large fountain with on-site storage.
Fountain detail. Pedestrians repeatedly washed their hands.
Wall Game. Seems the object is to run at the wall, mount the head, and remain standing on the head. Notice the wall stains from sweaty, oily attempts. Seems that only small children could remain on the head.
Bored, period-costumed guard, guarding the the northwest city gate.
One of the larger Old Town Dubrovnik Streets. Dubrovnik is a frequent film list for the Game of Thrones.
Sampling Croatian Craft Beers. Following an Italian dinner at Storia, we commenced our research. Maya recommended her local, an establishment under a boutique hotel that offered a selection of Croatian beers. Stuart, the amber; me, a citrus-infused Garden Brewing IPA brewed in Zagreb. Stuart insisted on displaying his best side. Did he?
Bosnian War Impacts in Dubrovnik
During the Bosnian War, the Yugoslav Army shelled Dubrovnik from the surrounding heights. This post near the Buza Gate summarized the damage, which has been repaired.
